Tacito Dice Board Set

toandfrom design shop

The to&from collection takes inspiration from Indian homeware, including the thali, a round serving platter, and the chakla, a flat kitchen board made of wood or marble.

Nine different stones from the Northern part of India were used, including green, white, Makrana and black marble, slate, gray and rainbow sandstone, Jaiselmer stone and black limestone. As a result no two pieces are the same, as each carries its own individual veining and colour formations.

The pieces, whose rounded edges appeal to the sense of touch, were designed to be versatile, beautiful and functional. They can be used as tableware, sharing platters or presentation dishes; in a bathroom or spa; or for decorating a mantle or coffee table. The solid forms and weight add gravitas and substance.

to&from worked with skilled artisans from the outskirts of Jaipur, Rajasthan and each piece is handmade.

Somya Singh, to&from co-founder, comments: ‘previous to the production, we spent a long time designing the range in London. However, on visiting the workshop, we were amazed at the expertise and flair of the craftsmen. They worked with our designs and added their style to make each piece truly distinctive.”

Tacito Dice Board Set

Tacito Dice Board Set

This simple, yet fun, dice set is handcrafted from fine Italian pewter to create a classic past-time that the whole family can enjoy.  The set is small enough to be stored in the games drawer or cupboard easily between uses, but like a fine chess set, looks great left out as decoration, enticing one to have a quick go.

The concept of taking turns to 'roll' dice to past the time is an ancient one.The often supernatural aspect of board games derives from the idea that the gods control "fortune" and the outcome of throws of dice. According to the ancient Greeks, Palamedes invented dice as a pastime during the ten-year siege of Troy. However, dice are older than the war of Troy; the first dice were probably pieces of wood, broken twigs, with two faces, one rounded face and one flat. They were based on the "heads or tails" system which was complicated by the number of twigs used. The present-day shape, in which the opposing faces always total 7 when added together, dates back to 1400 B.C.

The set perfectly complements a range of dice-based board games, such as Ludo, Backgammon, Risk and Monopoly, amongst others, but also dice games such as Yahtzee and Poker dice.

Poker dice, from the latter half of the 19th Century is a game involving five dice specially marked to simulate a playing-card deck’s top six cards (ace, king, queen, jack, 10, 9).

The object is to throw a winning poker hand, with hands ranking as in poker except that five of a kind is high and there are no flushes. After a player’s first throw, he elects either to stand pat or to draw (throw again), as in draw poker; in the latter case he separates out his best-showing dice and rolls up to three of the dice again, after which his result stands. In a version called horses, a hand of five aces loses. The game of Yahtzee evolved from poker dice.

A variant of poker dice, liar dice, as the name suggests, permits bluffing. Each player shields his throws and announces his hand, either truthfully or not. The second player, named the caller, or doubter, may either attempt a better hand or call the bluff. If the caller is correct in his call, he wins; if not, he loses.
